Stomp Boxes

Curious how many of you guys use stomp boxes.  I am a purist myself and don't use any.  It's all about the relationship of the guitar and the amplifier for me.  Just one of many reasons I build tube amps.  I'm mainly interested in a show of hands but if you wish to elaborate, by all means please do.

You need one more to say, "All of the above"!  I've got a 5 ft rack partially filled with Tom Scholz gear and a SS stereo power amp.  That allows me to get my Boston groove on.  The other part of the rack is filled with an elaborate preamp switching system that will accommodate 10 stomp boxes to prevent loss and cut the hiss.  Then I've got a little tube preamp booster that I use alone or maybe with a wah.  Then there are times when I go direct.  Back in the 70's-early 80's I had a huge pedal board.  Nowadays it's easier to get some of those tones without all the gear.  I do like to hear the amp more these days, so less or nothing is more.  However, there are times.....It just depends on my mood.

I do. I'm down to 4, counting the cheapie reverb pedal. I also have a Behringer chorus pedal (for $35 it sounds good), an Ibanez echo/delay that does what I want, and an Ibenez TS7.

For the most part I run the reverb sometimes not always, and use the TS7 as a volume/slight gain boost, except that now I use the footpedal instead for the "pseudo channel switch".

The chorus and delay/echo I only use on a few songs.

I don't own or use any stomp pedals, but I do use guitar rig
Guitar Rig has 100's of pedals, rack effects, amps, speaker cabinets, microphones - mic placements on the cabinets, and all sorts of sequencing tools, etc.

So, I guess it's like owning 200 effects and stomp boxes.
I never used effects or pedals many years ago

But now there are so many cool things I can do.
It brings on a creative spurt when you hear a weird sound that you have never heard before.
It sends you off in new playing directions.
Anywho, it does for me.

I love them.

I'll use anything to make good music including the kitchen sink, roadkill, and spandex if necessary (yep, I've used 'em all).

That being said, my two favorites are good guitars and good tube amps.

I am with you Richard. Purist...well maybe. My guitar playing skills--or my lazy lack of--for the first 25 or so years depended on a tube screamer, flangers, etc. on top of preamp distortion. Heavily medicated. I had Peavys, Fenders and Marshalls but the epiphany was when I built a wreck clone a few years ago. The 'clean to mean' approach and touch sensitivity helped me reconnect with the guitar as a musical instrument. Regards

I don't play!

At all!

I've tried,and tried some more,Guitar, trumpet, Bass, Drums, Keys, Clarinet, Flute, Vocals (worst yet)

I hear the music, I feel the music, the music moves me, but alas I cannot play the music.

So about 1981 I realized, just about everyone that does play music has a plug on the end of their instrument (even if it's just a mic) and so I started fooling around with electricity.

Closest I come to playing, I have a beat up Epi LPjr that I tune to open G that I kinda strum to test amps.

I do like the sound of a wah pedal, digital delays, and old germanium fuzz boxes

I am a pedal junkie  I like playing with them, Building them & modding them.  Some people have trophies on the shelf I have pedals.  I have been thinning the heard lately to make room for some new projects.  But when I play with the guys it usually just reverb, tube distortion pedal, and a delay.  Sometimes i kick in the digital space pedal.

I own many effects but am really smitten with this combo:
guitar ->
1. z vex super hard on
2. eh graphic fuzz
3. eh deluxe memory boy
4. 6g15 reverb
-> blackface bassman w/ 2x12.
This gives me enough options to gig with. Most of the pedals only come out at recording time for specific things, where there is the luxury of not having to string everything together at once.

I like my tube amps but many don't have reverb. I've been using a Boss RV2 for years and have added a MXR Carbon Copy for for some effects most recently.  I am also a fan of the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 pedal (The orange one before they were changed).

Always use a Boss delay in passive effects loop. I occasionally (maybe a handful of times a yr), will plug in a home wired
Tube Screamer.  I own two more pedals that little to no use.

Tubenit. You should check out an MXR Carbon Copy. It has this great MOD effect that fattens stuff up and sounds sort of like Metheny tone.  I use it in my passive effects loop too.

My pedals:
Simple:  Tuner; Wah; Overdrive
Very Simple:  NO pedals
Standard:  Tuner > Compressor > Wah > EQ > Overdrive > Reverb > Delay > Flanger > Chorus

The last set-up also works well for acoustic guitar with a magnetic PU (Wah, Overdrive & Flanger OFF).  I think that's a pretty minimal set-up.  But it's still 9 pedals not counting the power supply.

Or .......... I could continue using the Digital Delay and "pretend" I sound like Joe Bonamassa. (which I don't ...... unfortunately)

LC, how do you like the Parker? I've heard some say there great. Don't know if I could get over the way they look.

I like the tone and the feel of the Nitefly (above). I have a 1995 Deluxe Fly too. The Fly is an amazing guitar that also plays like nothing else.  I do have a Strat and a Tele too.

More on pedals: I always see stuff about how a distortion pedal has lots of gain and can be used to hit the front of your tube amp really hard.  I never understood this because if you turn it off you'll drop way out of the mix.

I set my distortion pedals to boost just a bit for solos and sometimes I actually lower the output for some effect.

Hey Loose, how do you like your FullDrive?  Do you run that the same time as your rat?  I thought the FD could pull off the fuzz too?

envelope filters, univibe, phasers, flangers, analog and digital delays, simple JFET boosts, love em.

That Fulldrive II has been a favorite for years. It's a very smooth overdrive and the boost is just right. Does not do fuzz. Occasionally, I'll turn them all on at once.

I have 8 or 10 stomp boxes. I use them all the time playing in my jamroom mostly with my Allen Accomplice and or Peavey Pacer/Deluxe reverb conversion. Lately at church I've been using my Mesa Boogie Rocket 440 with clean, drive channel and Boss RV-3 Reverb/Delay Pedal. For 90% of my playing I can be happy with a dry tube amp, delay pedal and Guitar. Platefire

I spend so much time fooling around with amps that my evil laboratory gets pretty cluttered. I hardly ever have an amp around that is actually in its cab and sitting on top of a speaker cab. I like to use a carbon copy and maybe a little chorus sometimes, but running the cables and such is a real pain, so I usually don't.

I have several, but seldom use them any more:

• Yamaha DG-Stomp:  great, versatile unit with Rolls Midi Buddy (patch selection) and expression pedal (controlling preamp volume; on-board wah very weak)
• Boss DD-5:  first model with tap-tempo I believe
• Dano Cool Cat (the big 18v green one)
• Crybaby Classic (modded for true bypass)

I most recently used the Stomp extensively as an acoustic preamp for a Dean Markley soundhole pickup, into a direct box to PA system.  Sadly, most gear remains closeted/ drawered these days due to curious toddlers.
