Bonamassa pedal effects board
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:43:46 am »
Since I have very little experience with effects, I found this really interesting and informative.  Over the yrs, I'd tend to buy a pedal ...... never use it and then give it away.

&feature=related

Listening to his tone, is making me rethink this entire approach.  I kind of like the Vibe-Unit that he demos.

I bought one of these recently:

http://www.coolcattone.com/product_vibe.html

It cost me $45 and sounds great. I'm going to re-house the effect in a more normal enclosure because I hate the fact that the knobs are on the back of the unit (who's idea was that?).

Thanks for posting the link...my interest in effects is even more recent than my interest in building amps, so it's cool to see someone actually go through their rig in detail.

I am spoiled by guitar rig because it has every effect that ever was in it.

No need for floor pedals.

Nice - He like his pedals :)

Re: Guitar Rig: I dunno dude - I find guitar Rig pretty synthetic - Its good to try out what might sound good - i often find a sound i like in it and then go find the right pedals!
It takes alot of EQ to pull out that sharp sorta space twang it puts on everyrthing - i could be using it wrong i guess -perhaps not sparingly enough - are you DI'ing or mic'd your amp?
Cheers,

There ya go, you figured that out yourself.

I have been using guitar rig since 2003 and have recorded over 100 songs using it.

I'll jump in here.  I had the privilege of hearing a Guitar Rig exactly set up like Doug's with a recording rig just like his.  (I mean exactly the same).

The guy playing it was excellent. Played as well as Doug does, IMO.

It sounded absolutely incredible to me. Very touch articulate with a HUGE array of tones. Really amazing sounds in it. You could do incredible sustain and overdrive that sounded very authentic to a tube amp and be able to talk over it. It was the coolest setup I've ever seen for recording. I've heard recordings done on that set up that sounded as good or better than most of the albums, tapes and CD's I own.

I was greatly impressed to say the least. I can't say I've ever used a pedal that sounded any better than that set up did. And I'll never have the playing talent of that guitarist either.

Not trying to be challenging with my comments. It's honestly how impressive all that was to me.

hehe - my comment was merely voicing my own frustration with it.
I must play some more with it - especially as a send to a  bus effect as opposed to a channel effect
i'd love to hear a song or two with delay put to giood use, and chorus, and trem - these were the effects i particularly struggled with.
I hope i didnt come accross wrong!

good vibes!

Hard to say, I really don't switch on and off many effects.

The only effects I footswitch on and off are delay, wah-wah and once in a while an Otavia

I use the Psychedelay in all the my rigs
Very complex multi layered, like a very expensive Lexicon.
The delay just creates a huge big wide wall of sound.

In guitar rig you build racks of gear and then your foot pedal presets switch between those different racks of gear.
Pic your amps, your distorion, your delays, your cabinets, your mics

Each rack or preset can be thought of as one complex effect that shapes your sound.
So it's not as easy as asking which effect do I use.

For example in this screen shot, this one preset is comprised of all the things you see on the right
Starting at the top
Wah, Octavia, distortion, plexi amp, the cabinets and mics, and the psychedelay

The wah, Octaver and delay are not on all the time, I switch them on like stomp boxes.
