GPS and map making info
Here are some of the programs I use for mapping.
Ozi-explorer is my main mapping software. I use it to download and upload tracks and waypoints from my GPS and I also make lots of cool maps using Ozi.- Ozi-Explorer
I also use the Ozi-3D software add on to make 3D maps.

Doug Cox writes the USA photomaps program. This software is able to access the Terra server data base and assemble/stitch together USGS Topo and Satellite images into larger maps. From there USA photo maps is able to export a large georeferenced image that I can import into Ozi-Explorer. It is a very cool piece of software. - USA photomaps

I only use GSAK just to convert .loc waypoints to the Ozi-explorer .wpt waypoint format but it is able to do lots more. - GSAK

cGPS mapper is the tool I used to make the custom Garmin maps above and upload them into my Garmin. It's a bit technical to do this sort of thing but you can create any sort of custom map and download it into your Garmin if you have the time and desire. - cGPS mapper
