Hello everyone,

I'm originally from the UK, but now live with my family in the US. I work in Chicago as a programmer, but pretend to be a rock star when at home in Indiana. I've been playing guitar since the age of 9 and bought my first (and still my only) tube amp in the late 80s.

Recently Ive been really interested in building my own tube amp (the AX84 project looks interesting) but I thought I'd start by trying to troubleshoot my own Marshall 2204. I've been writing about my experiences doing that here http://hotbottles.wordpress.com/. Even though I've only been poking around for a few weeks I am having a great time.

I hope I can offer something to the forum as well as take advantage of the multiple years of experience here.

Thanks!

Hey Simon, Welcome, I have that amp in the 2x12 combo vert. inputs. I like to get my tubes from Eurotubes out in Oregon. Bob is really helpful and has a slew of tube options for the 50w marshall
from mild to wild..............you probably need to replace the electrolytic caps in there first, that will probably quiet it down ...they look like the originals? and are way too old....I'd do that then rebias the tubes you have. You can get the caps you need right off this site along with anything else you need.

Rafe,
Thank you for that insight. You've just confirmed my reasoning for registering at this forum!

Now can I ask a dumb/newbie question? Which capacitors do you mean? The large blue Daly capacitors? Or the one's on the PCB? Or indeed, all of them?

Also, does this relate to the ringing/pinging sound I get when I tap one of the output tubes?

Thanks again,

Simon

laugh Trust me I'm not that far ahead of you, if at all. But I have worked on my own amp successfully so i'll share what I know, and I'll steer you to a few good places , that worked for me. The large Daly's are 50/50's 2 caps in one can, 3 of them on the outside.  I believe  that you have 2 separate 10uf's on the inside ( I haven't replaced those 2 in mine yet, so in my case the were OK )  I didn't replace them because I was unaware of them , I'll soon do it. I would also clean your tube sockets. Eurotubes has a video on that and biasing this amp. Only one of the output tubes? If so reverse them and see if it's the tube or socket , Cleaning may help ....tap on your preamp tubes see if one isn't very micro phonic. Dreamtone.org has schematics and good info on the 50 watt marshalls and other marshalls.....Doug here has a great parts service, it's quick too, one day I expect someone here to post that there parts arrived to them before they placed the order, it also helps to support this site, which may be the best out there.
This is probably my favorite amp, I bought it in 86 from a guy that was using it as speakers in his car....I think his brother bought it new in 84 and died.....The low input was never grounded so I never used it until this year ...I like it. I've replace the inputs,  50/50 caps, both volume pots, I smoked the PT in 02 and had that replaced the amp had the wrong fuse in it ....always check a used amp I've learned....
I had an effect's loop put in it around 88 but I don't use it ....I am planning to remove it and use the two holes for bias points.....I play this amp at low levels and it's great ....high levels are better ....I used to use a Brake (Attenuator) I don't really find that necessary this amp is great for anything

Fantastic!
I've ordered 3 50-50 caps from Doug's store, so I'll replace those first. I might make audio recordings of the before and after for comparison. I have socket cleaner too so I'll do that while trying the swap. The preamp tubes pass the tap test with flying colours so I'm not pointing any fingers at them just yet.

I've had my 2204 for more than 20 years and I have yet to find another amp that can beat it. My tone requirements are pretty simple....I just want to sound like Clapton in the 60's.
