For years, I've been telling people my three favorite vocalists are Aretha, Bonnie Raitt & Sarah Brightman. Could hardly believe when I saw this video of Aretha and Bonnie!

Sarah, people either love her or HATE her! I, for one, love her! I think people think she got lots of preferential treatment married to Andrew. I think she has an awesome voice. Another one of my favs is Annie Haslam. I have all the Renaissance albums. And I bought them at a time when I was playing Purple and Sabb's. Man, did I get some crap from my musician fiends....I mean, friends! Annie just had that haunting voice and I loved the Prog Rock of Renaissance. Awesome!

Yeah Aretha is up there for me... Bonnie's slide playin is awesome. Here's a couple of my favorites. An all-timer and someone I've been listening to lately:

I agree with jukelemon. Allison Krauss. She has done collaborations with alot of country and bluegrass artists. Heck she even did one with James Taylor.
I would like to see her take her vocals to the edge. Maybe some rockish stuff.

She had perfect pitch and control over her voice that no one has touched in country music since. This tune is just the original with some photo's set to it, as I could'nt find the original performed. Anyone who's ever opened they're mouth to try and sing can appreciate how much control she had in this tune. Its amusing seeing so many posting video's of them singing Patsy's songs, thats some big balls in my opinion or at least some big ego's to even think they can touch her, some maybe in tribute and love for her and her songs I guess. I guess they didn't have a category for her?
I don't hear any female singers that have the range and vocal character that Patsy had.

She Toured in the country music circuits and venues near exclusively....with a guy named Cowboy Copus, that would get you labeled country. Certainly she is in a category of her own, she'd probably not make country records today as she'd be out of the modern Nashville-pop mold.....No sharp nasal twang and she was certainly less in the looks department than is required today. It is tough to say who my fave female vocalist is.....I'd say Patsy and Aretha are probably the best....I like Gladys Knight and Martha Reeves too. For Rocker chicks...I like Debbie Harry from Blondie and Grace Slick in the Jefferson Airplane era. j. |
