Hack Of All Trades

« on: December 20, 2006, 09:18:23 pm »

A few days ago a few forum members were talking about the clean tones possible from smaller tweed amps.

I'm visiting my brother this week, who has my first 5E3. He agreed to let me record some of his warmups with this amp. No real song, per se....but it'll show the versatility of this little amp.

This track is a Strat using Mid and Neck pickups..Starts dirty then switches to clean with a little rock back on the volume knob.

Now for some buckers.
Here is one with my Guild Starfire IV. Clean with Neck HB dirty with Bridge HB.

That really is a fine sounding amp j. I got to get going and build one of those. That will probably be my next amp project.

Peace

Neil Young has alot to do with him asking for a 5E3...My brother played a few covers of Neil's in a band and was always looking for that tone.  This nails it, whenever I play this amp, I have to play Cinnamon Girl and Ohio by CSNY because it really sounds like the record thru this one.

As for the pics...I used that BF era silver grille cloth only temporarily because I have lots of it laying around, though I dug the Red Tolex.  It's getting a Marshall Salt&Pepper grille as soon as I do another order of Tolex and Grillecloth. Some of my Favorite looking amps were the coloured Marshalls from the early 70's so I like to emulate that whenever I can.
