I made this chart in Excel when I had to sort through a big pile of mil spec carbon comps and organize them according to value. I get dyslexic when I try to interpret most resistor color charts, so I made one that makes it easier to work back from the color bands to the values. I find it useful for quickly identifying ones I don't know by heart. I only put the values that I tend to use working on guitar amps and I formatted it for 4x6 photo paper. It prints out nice and sharp on the glossy stuff. Please: 1. Help yourself if you think you can use it. 2. Let me know if you see any errors 3. Let me know if there are any values that you think should be added (my idea is to keep it as short as possible) Here's a link to download it as a PDF. Doug: I've seen it, used it, and definitely appreciated it. It requires a computer, however, which I don't have at my bench, so I made my card. Then I found out i can use the card faster than the "resistor calculator" on computer. Something about seeing the color on the chart instead of reading a word "yellow" or "brown" goes a lot quicker for me. I always did like looking at the pictures better than reading the words...

All the calculators I've seen have you input the colors and the produce the resistance. Does anyone know of a calculator where you input the resistance you need and it shows you the color code?
Sure would help when I'm loading a board and have a variety of resistors in a bin...

i actually learned the codes while using them. it's easy to recognize very fast if you know the colors.
i don't calculate tough. say teh first 2 are red. if i see the multiplier i don't go counting. i just know if its yellow its 220K if it's orange i know it's 22K. i don't count, i think recognize is a better term. hard to explain in english tough :p

I work the other way. My resistor bins are labeled by "last color". If I want a 22K, I might accept a 20K or a 27K.... in any case, it's gonna end in Orange. If I want a Meg or so, gonna be green on the end. So my bins are stickered Blk Brn Rd Org Yel Gn. (Or usta be.... a few fell off in recent decades.)

I had to ask, you never know if someone has missed something on the library page.
If I had a pile of resistors to sort out, I would take them to the computer.
I don't need a chart for 4 band resistors but a 5 band metal film like I sell, I need good lighting, magnifiers and a computer.
Those blue background metal films are a bitch to read, for me anyway.

Jeff967 - thank you SO MUCH! The resistance calculator alone is exactly what I was asking for, but there's a lot more. The voltage ("potential") divider calculator lets you go from resistances to voltages, or from desired voltages to reistance. Awesome!

Those are useful. I bookmarked that page.
But I can still use the little 4x6 card from the first post in this thread faster, and in both directions (colors-->value, value-->colors). No typing or mousing, just hold the resistor up to the card.
It's graphic so you don't have to think as hard. Try it, you'll like it.
