TUBES RULE

« on: February 18, 2012, 06:15:52 am »

Hello,
The title says it all.. I want to build a 2x15" guitar cabinet.
Do you guys have a plan for something like this?
I saw some Showman cabs but could not find plans..

TIA!

It will be paired with a 4x12" and a 100W beast... headbang

I'm trying to figure out from the plans I found on the topic you pointed me to.

P.S.: I have thought about building a straight 4x12" cabinet and sub the baffle for a 2x15" - no ports..probably open back too...
Any ideas?

TIA

I built a 4X with 2X 12's + 2X 10's with the speakers mixed diagonally.  I.e, 12 X 10 on top vs. 10 X 12 on bottom.  It's only 26" X 26" square, which could not be done if the 12's were placed side-by-side, instead of staggered.  With the speaker sizes offset against one another, you can squeeze them closer together to reduce cabinet width.  Otherwise 2X 15's side-by-side will require 15 + 15 + [say 3X 1" for clearance between them and on ea side) + [3/4" x 2 = 1-1/2 for side walls) = 34-1/2" plus allowance for tolex & grill cloth, about 35" or 36" total width!  Unless width is what you want, you can probably reduce that to about 30" wide if you stagger the speaker sizes.  BTW: I'd recommend at least a 14" depth so the cab won't tend to topple.  Remember it will have a higher center of gravity (less stable) with a smaller effective footprint on casters, increasing tipsiness.

OTOH, if you want the cab 36" tall, you can stack the 15's vertically, with the 12's stacked on the side.  (Though that's a long way to hoist a 100W tube amp.)

The design is simple for open back.  Spread out some newspapers & lay your speakers down on it.  Then you can plan-out the size and shape of the baffle board.  Once you have the dimensions of the baffle board, you then have the inside dimensions of the cab (with allowances for tolex & grill cloth).

Thank JJasilli!!!

I took the showman example and I'm working on it...Indeed, it's a wild cab..
After fooling around with Acad for a while I got the following external size to: 900mm (L) X 585mm (H) X 285mm (W).

I have also considered the possibility of building a Straight 4x12" and sub in 2x15"...

you then have the inside dimensions of the cab (with allowances for tolex & grill cloth).

Actually, when building my cabs, I cut baffle board to exact internal dimensions, make everything that's necessary and then I remove 3mm from all 4 sides of the baffle board..

I'm planning to use WGS G15C inside...
Do you guys have other suggestions?

Thanks!!!
Best Regards

If you really wanted to move some air, you could build the cabinets that Deep Purple's Roger Glover used in the early 70's, model 1984.  They were absolute tone monsters - and back breaking monsters!  That is a Major sitting on top.  Roger also used custom factory 4x12 cabinets that were 4" deeper (something to think about).   His amp tech stapled fiberglass ceiling tile material inside, as well as in all of Ritchie's cabinets.

What are those speakers? I've never seen baskets like those before.

Yep, 4x15.  In this case they are cast aluminum frame G-15-M's rated at only 25watts each, so Roger had to run two of these and two of the deep 4x12 with each Major.  I heard this setup in '72 and the only thing that comes close was Geezer Butler's live setup - but Roger's tone was incredible.  Usually bass is lost so easy live, but that is one thing that really stood out.  Marshall only made that cab in 71 and 72 and they put Goodman or Celestion speakers in them.  Not many around any more.

Here is a vid of them in action.  At 2:20 you can see how two stacked with amp are like 8' tall!  At 3:05 you will see how hard the Major can work out a speaker....  That is a custom 2x15 reflex bin that Marshall built special for Roger.  I think it is loaded with JBL's.  If you look close you will also see a very old and rare JTM45 offset face Marshall under the Major.  Not sure who used that as their tech told me they always had 50 and 100 watt models laying around - freebees from Marshall that they never used or tossed off the stage.  The horn cabs were off the shelf Marshall PA cabs used by Jon Lord, powered by Major(s).  When I saw them they were crushingly loud and had cleared out a few of the rows in front.  Ritchie's tone.... blob8 !!!!

BTW, for all you bass players...  If you notice Roger's Ric has some extra pickups?  Those were Fender Jazz pickups wired humbucker to get some bottom out of the Ric, the other pickups were not used.  I'd say that had a little to do with his tone too!

Oh jeez, I am getting old and my eyesight is a-failin'...  I thought you wanted to build this for a bass.  I just noticed it was for your guitar.  Sorry to clutter the thread.... BangHead  Ignore me please.

Further thoughts: I would consider a 3X with a 15 + 2X 10's.  The surface area of 2X 10's approx = one 15, so there's acoustic balance.  The 10's don't have to match tonally.  With the right wiring scheme and impedance selection, you can get good enough impedance matching to your amp.  Also wider & less beamy speaker projection -- a downside to 15's.  I think the tonal synergy of this speaker mix is worth thinking about.  Also the cab can be downsized in size & weight, while retaining tone and power.

Hi rzenc,
I have a Marshall 2x15 bass cab that is the same height and width as a 4x12 except it is a few inches deeper. Let me know if you need some dimensions.

For speakers, Weber makes a Jensen style 15" and Eminence has one called Big Ben. Mine has 250 watt Celestion Sidewinders, and they don't sound very good for the type of guitar sound I'm going for.
