Hey guys and gals. My name is Ben and I am new to this hobby. In the process of building a 5E3 circuit amp. It sounds great FWIW. Got an old RCA phono amp that only hummed loudly. Replaced all the caps and got hooked so I ripped it all out and started studying schematics that I could make work with what I had and the 5C3 and 5E3 fit closely. The phono amp came with 6cg7 preamp tubes which is why a tried the 5c3. Not sure why but it wasn't being very reliable. It would start humming unless the tone knob was all the way off or all the way up. It would go away with replacing v1 but after 6 v1 replacements in three days I gave up on the 5c3. I ordered new tube sockets and the resistors and caps to turn it into a 5e3. There is just more info on the net about the 5e3 too. I think though one day i'm gonna build a 5c3 with the 8 pin octal preamp tube. The 6cg7 was a cool tube to use though. When it worked it had very nice headroom and only a lite grind even at full volume. Not sure why the 5c3 failed cause i also worked on grounding while it was all apart and that improved my ohm readings all over the amp. Old aluminum chassis needed scuffing up to get decent grounds. Anyways I'm rambling.
About me, I'm a mechanic at a Nissan Dealership and I'm 30 years old. My guitar is a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Pro. It has seymour duncan p90 stacks. Bridge wired in series and neck wired parallel It's like having two different guitars. One day I think i'll wire in push pull pots to switch series/parallel on the fly. I have all the original equipment for it too. I don't have an amp for it anymore. In my younger rock n roll years I had a great Rivera Knuckle Head 120watt. It was awesome but after not touring anymore it was too much amp to sit in my apartment. Went to a Mesa Maveric 30watt twin and liked it a lot but sold it one year and its been years since I owned any other amp. Borrowed a Peavy amp from a friend a got the bug to own an amp again and now here I am building one. I'm Married and have a 6 year old girl. I play mandolin in a gospel band in Nashville for a church held in a Honky Tonk. Roberts Western World on broadway if anyone wants to attend :) Guess thats all for now ask anything you wish.

Welcome Ben!
A friend of mine owns a music store and he sold Rivera amps. When visiting I would always play the Knuckle Head - what a great sounding amp! It's hard to let the good ones go... In another 10 yrs or so, you will be looking for a used one again! Good luck on your latest build!
