Vacuum Packed Tone

This weekend I had the fortune of seeing the documentary It Might Get Loud with interviews of three different generations of guitar players--Jimmy Page, Edge and Jack White. Very insightful as they reminesce about their backround and about their art. I've been a Jimmy Page fan forever but it IMHO gives a very human side of their craft and the intensity of their artistic talents. Page has always been in a league all his own. Edge is consumed by effects and White was--to me--a very interesting, intense but fearless sort. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, it is an hour and a half worth of worthwhile viewing. Regards

I saw this on Netflix watch instantly, and was going to add it to my queue

Did not know who the third guy was?

I have one of the Roku players and so I watch the Netflix stuff on my Plasma TV.

A couple others I watched and liked were
The making of Exile on mainstreet and the making of Dark side of the moon.
Both used mostly old original film footage

I really love that jimmy page is kind of nerdy, like for a stadium rock era guitar hero guy.  I mean he was melting faces in an argyle sweater vest.  That's my kind of cool.  In the context of the movie though, I was most interested in edge.  I can't relate to what he see's in all those racks of effects, but it's nice to see some playing put on a pedestal that's clean and pretty.  I get really bored of blues rock, there's a section (iirc) where jack white plays an old record and is super psyched about the guitar sound.  All I got out of it was a cranked small amp, probably recorded with a ribbon mic.  But I guess that's why he plays in front of thousands of people and I play in front of several.

I'll have to check out the stones doc, the tom petty one is 4 hrs of awesome.

I enjoyed that show.  I love The Edge, but I couldn't deal with his rig.  That thing is insane.

Watching this now, highlights for me personally

22 minute mark, Zep playing "how many more times" = awesome
32 min mark, Jimmy listening to Link Wray =  grin
1:08, Yardbirds footage = way cool

Still not sure who the guy from Detroit is, but I liked his style better than the edge.
Not much of a Edge fan I guess, but I do like some U2 stuff.

If you had teenage kids, you'd be more aware of Jack White.  Of the "current" rock stars, I'd put him right at the top.  I've actually personally bought a couple of his records.  Very few records I've purchased in this century are less than 20 year old recordings.  Sad but true.  His work with Loretta Lynn is nothing short of brilliant.

I had heard the buzz on the White Stripes, but when I saw them on the Grammys I was convinced.  Sounded like they were going to tear the roof off the place.  Have no idea how they got "popular".

I'm a White Stripes fan, but probably like his other band "The Raconteurs" a little more.  It's a more traditional lineup than just guitar and drums that was White Stripes.  WS put out a live CD earlier this year that had a DVD packaged with it that documented their recent tour of Canada.  The goal of the tour was to go "off the beaten path", and it took them to some pretty remote towns way up north.  It was enjoyable to watch.

I've heard he is in another band too, playing drums, but I forget the name.

I'd have to agree that I like the Raconteurs more than the White Stripes, but neither band has put out a record that I thought every single song was great unlike Led Zep whose 1st 3 records are earth shattering cover to cover.  OTOH, Van Lear Rose doesn't have a single bad song on it, and I'm not much of a country fan beyond Hank, Willie, and Johnny Cash.  I believe the story goes that the White Stripes dedicated a record to Loretta.  She caught wind of it and invited them over for dinner.  They hit it off and the rest is history.  It didn't get a single nomination at the CMA's but got 5 Grammy nominations and won 2.

Re: Yardbirds footage.

I saw the Yardbirds play when Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were in the band. I was bummed out at first when the curtain opened and Paul Samwell-Smith wasn't there.  And then they started playing huh !

Geez; I've been away from the forum for WAY too long.
DirecTV is rebroadcasting it next week:
https://www.directv.com/entertainment/program/details/MV002440850000?omnitureReferrer=GS

We don't get that channel, but will probably rent from Netflix.

Thanks!!
